How to run a successful business online

By Li-at Karpel Gurwicz, Head of Strategic Marketing at

The best ideas for small businesses can start with hobbies that you’re already involved in. From creating a website on your own to connecting with communities worldwide, jumpstarting a small business venture is becoming increasingly more accessible. However, the transition from pastime activity to profit-making can be tricky. To make the process easier, here are some steps on how to run an online business successfully:

Conduct market research
Market research gives you a deeper understanding of your target audience, how they interact with competing brands, and how they would engage with your product or service. Industry trends, local competitors, and big brands will set the tone and should shape your strategic plans. Conducting market research helps you stay on top of key issues, keeps you up-to-date on new developments and helps you to see where your brand would fit in.

Create a business plan
You should start with a business plan. This plan will help you set short term and long term goals as well as showcase the businesses’ strengths and weaknesses and let you plan for costs, time and resources. All of this can help predict the growth rate of your business. With the insights provided by the business plan, you are then ready to work on your marketing activity, making sure it supports your business goals.

Brand yourself
Building a brand is about creating something that is bigger than just providing a service or selling a product. Think of the brand as a person with its own identity and personality. Consider what is driving your business and brand positioning. Elements such as the tone of voice, logo or tagline as well as other elements such as colours, typography, and imagery make up the overall branding of a business. Successful brands are able to attract clients by offering them a uniform vision and a voice to identify with.

Create a site that reflects your brand personality
Since this will be your primary platform where most of the contact with your target audience will be taking place, having an attractive website is very important. Platforms such as offer you the chance to build a professional and personalised free website within minutes due to the incorporation of artificial intelligence into website design. Websites are the home of your online presence and can be used to manage your business – sell products and services online, engage with clients through various tools such as newsletters, email marketing, content, etc. Ensure that your website has a good mix of content and imagery and enhance your site’s SEO in order to increase traffic from search engine results.

Be social
Social media offers great opportunities for new and small businesses to tap into and build a following. Pick out the most relevant platforms to be active on. If you’re offering a service or product that aren’t visually striking, consider opening a page on Facebook or Twitter rather than on Pinterest or Instagram.
Maintaining your social media channels and keeping them active is as important as creating the page for your business itself. Come up with a regular posting schedule for the channels you have and stick by it. Moreover, ensure that you keep the tone of your brand consistent throughout all your social media channels.

Stay in touch with your audience
Email marketing is one of the best ways to market your business. Through your website or competitions on social media, get your customers to fill in a form with their email address and start building your database. Email marketing is useful to reach out to potential or current consumers to let them know when you have a new product, offer or news. Make sure it contains high-quality content on a regular basis to keep your followers involved and interested.

Establish a reputation for yourself
As a small business owner, take part in a network of local initiatives such as events. Connecting with local business owners can help establish partnerships and expose your business to a larger audience.

The increasing number of online businesses requires you to stand out from the crowd. Offer consumers more than what you have for sale – so make sure you create an online presence that is relevant and meaningful to them.
